Obnoxious snotty brat
...played with obvious delight and relish by Joan Woodbury. Her, Poodles Hanneford, and Madge Bellamy are the only ones who do any actual acting, though—the others render wooden performances, as though they were doing a script read-through rather than something they were actually going to print.
Despite all of that, Bob Steel (as RCMP Matt O'Brien) makes obvious his distaste for Joan's character—at least at first. By the end of the film, though, he demonstrates that all those trees are not the only places where the sap is running.
Unimaginative screenplay (though the Mountie does have a few tricks up his sleeve) and wooden performances made for minimal entertainment. It wasn't boring, but it wasn't exciting either. It wasn't much of anything, except for obnoxious in the case of Joan's character. Extra points, though, for the exceptionally handsome horses, and for the one-member vaulting club. Might've been a better movie had they removed the people altogether, and just shown us some beautiful horses for an hour, à la Ginger Kathrens.

Bob Steele (In Color!)
This is a somewhat trimmed version of the film as originally released, but it is the best print and color of it that I have ever seen. I have owned a copy of this film on tape in one form or another for about 20 years, and it is one of my favorites as I'm a big Bob Steele fan anyway. Steele is, well, Steele in this picture. Joan Woodbury, a "B" actress in the 30's 40's and into the 50's, is very attractive and peppery in this part and quite good. The rest of the cast, all pros, lend fine support and makes for a very enjoyable picture. Madge Bellamy gives a very gritty performance, especially. If you can find a print with the swimming scene in it you have found a missing gem. This version is still fine. Enjoy. One distraction, Frank Sanucci's sound track musical background.
